Centrality of arts

Leading figures in the arts world urge cultural policy to take centre stage in the forthcoming white paper

Sir, We would like to congratulate Ed Vaizey, the minister of state for culture and the digital economy, who today becomes the longest serving culture minister, overtaking the record of Jennie Lee, Britain’s first minister for the arts (October 1964 to June 1970).

The arts and culture have always benefited when there has been continuity of political leadership. We hope that the government’s forthcoming white paper on cultural policy will reassert the centrality of the arts and culture to British life.
